Vibration Isolation for Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
نویسنده
چکیده
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy measures tunneling current from conducting surfaces. Through analysis, it is possible to make a three dimensional picture accurate on an atomic scale of a surface and probe microscopic phenomenon. The procedure is dependent on the distance between the surface of the microscope tip and the sample surface. High tolerances on a scale less than an angstrom are required and outside vibrations can be fatal to the results of the experiment. A vibration sensor helps determine the location and magnitude, and can also be a tool in evaluating the effectiveness of current vibration reducing equipment. For my project, I constructed a vibration sensor to detect vibrations in the lab. The detector successfully detected vibrations during several test on two STM systems.

Upgrade of a commercial four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy system.
Upgrade of a commercial ultra-high vacuum four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy system for atomic resolution capability and thermal stability is reported. To improve the mechanical and thermal performance of the system, we introduced extra vibration isolation, magnetic damping, and double thermal shielding, and we redesigned the scanning structure and thermal links. The success of the upgrad...
متن کاملVibration isolation analysis for a scanning tunneling microscope
We analyze the efficiency of a vibration isolation system (VIS) for a scanning tunneling microscope as a function of the different parameters involved. The VIS consists of a stack of several metallic plates, separated by rubber elements with known properties. We show three-dimensional graphs obtained for different values of parameters such as rigidity (spring) constant (K), damping constant (C)...
متن کاملBroad frequency and amplitude control of vibration in freestanding graphene via scanning tunneling microscopy with calculated dynamic pseudo-magnetic fields
A technique to locally generate mechanical vibrations in freestanding graphene using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is presented. The frequency of the mechanical vibrations is tuned over nearly four decades and is centered around 10 Hz. The amplitude of the vibrations also changes over nearly three decades centered on 1 nm. The oscillating motion is generated in two ways: first, by scannin...
متن کاملAn ultrahigh vacuum fast-scanning and variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope for large scale imaging.
We describe the design and performance of a fast-scanning, variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating from 80 to 700 K in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), which routinely achieves large scale atomically resolved imaging of compact metallic surfaces. An efficient in-vacuum vibration isolation and cryogenic system allows for no external vibration isolation of the UHV chamber. The d...
متن کاملScanning tunneling microscope measurements of the amplitude of vibration of a quartz crystal oscillator
We report highly accurate measurements of the vibrational amplitude of a transverse shear mode quartz resonator, obtained by directly imaging the surface oscillatory motion with a scanning tunneling microscope. Amplitude measurements, performed over a range of resonator drive levels and quality factors, agree with theoretical predictions to within a factor of two. © 2000 American Institute of P...
